Hurricane Erin, initially a category five storm with winds up to 160mph, has been downgraded to a category three hurricane but is expected to grow in size.
Currently moving northwards away from the Caribbean after passing north of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, it poses threats to the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Turks and Caicos islands with anticipated flash flooding, landslides, and strong winds.
Life-threatening surf and rip currents are expected along the US East Coast, particularly Florida and the mid-Atlantic states, as well as Bermuda and the Bahamas.
The US Coast Guard has implemented restrictions on vessels in several ports due to gale-force winds.
The storm is not expected to make landfall on the US mainland, though the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts an above-normal hurricane season this year..
