A mass grave excavation has commenced at the al-Khasfa site near Mosul, Iraq.
Believed to be the work of ISIL (ISIS), the site, a large sinkhole, is estimated to contain at least 4,000 bodies, potentially many more.
The excavation, a joint effort involving Iraqi officials, forensic investigators, and the Martyrs Foundation, is initially focusing on surface remains and evidence gathering.
A full exhumation will require international assistance due to the site's hazardous conditions, including sulfur water and unexploded ordnance, which may complicate the recovery and identification of remains.
The majority of victims are thought to be Iraqi military personnel and Yazidis, with many reportedly killed by ISIL fighters and decapitated.
The site's scale may make it the largest mass grave in modern Iraqi history, according to some involved in the investigation.
The excavation also highlights the ongoing effort to unearth mass graves from previous conflicts in Iraq..
