Israel's far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced plans to build over 3,000 homes in the E1 settlement project in the occupied West Bank.
This project, situated between Jerusalem and the Maale Adumim settlement, has been stalled for decades due to international opposition.
Smotrich asserts that the construction will effectively end the possibility of a Palestinian state, a claim rejected by the Palestinians and many international actors.
The move has drawn sharp criticism from the US, EU, UK, Germany, and Turkey, all of whom view the settlement expansion as illegal under international law and detrimental to the prospects of a two-state solution.
The planned construction would significantly disconnect the West Bank from East Jerusalem, a key Palestinian territorial claim.
Meanwhile, the Israeli government defends the plan as an exercise of sovereignty and rejects accusations of genocide leveled by the Palestinian foreign ministry.
The announcement comes amidst declarations from several countries to recognize a Palestinian state in the coming months..
